Wendy’s is back in the news…again. The popular burger chain has launched a Spicy Black Bean Burger, a new plant-based option aimed at both meat-eaters and vegans.

Wendy’s Spicy Black Bean Burger was the first of Wendy’s new burgers to hit the market, and you can bet it’s one of their most popular. The burger consists of black beans that are mixed with mozzarella cheese, spicy red pepper sauce, fried onions, and a medium-sized round of fresh-cut French-fried potato. The first thing I noticed about the burger was its unique appearance. The fresh-cut French-fried potatoes have round shapes, making them look like miniature hamburgers. Wendy’s, the fast-food chain that’s been around for decades, is known for their burgers. So it’s not surprising that Wendy’s also has a vegan option that’s similar to one of their burger recipes. The Black Bean Burger is made with black beans, and comes topped with lettuce, tomato, red onion, and their signature spicy pickles. It’s presented in a large pita wrap that’s served with a side of French fries.

The spicy black bean burger consists of the famous black bean patty, crispy grilled chipotle jalapenos, pepper jack cheese, spicy chipotle sauce, tomatoes, onions and romaine on a toasted premium bun. The burger is more for vegetarians/flexitarians than vegans.

It seems Wendy’s took over a year to develop this black bean burger. While the world has been conquered by Impossible and Beyond Meat, who seek to mimic the characteristics of meat, the Black Bean Burger is going in a different direction.

The black bean chop is made from black beans, carrots, brown rice, red and green bell pepper, wheat berries, corn and a mixture of spices. And while the name implies hamburger, this sandwich should be a satisfying taste in itself, not something that makes you think you’re eating meat. I’ve never heard of wheat, but it sounds like a shampoo ingredient to me.

I applaud the burger for going beyond the patty and hoping to create dynamic flavors with crispy jalapeños, pepper jack cheese and hot sauce. Let’s see how it went.

When I first looked at the foil packaging, I was pleasantly surprised to see that the burger was actually a belt. When I tried the Wendy’s Bourbon Bacon Cheeseburger, I was surprised at how small the burger was.

When you open the sandwich, you immediately realize that you are dealing with another feathered bird. The multicultural mix of colors and swirls in the burger patty was easy to spot. A premium bun, iceberg head, tomato, crispy jalapeño on a slice of pepper jack cheese, slices of onion and a disappointing amount of sauce – the Spicy Black Bean Burger had it all.

I was surprised that when the chop was cut in half, the whole grain of black beans and corn was clearly visible. I don’t have much experience making veggie burgers, but I’ve always had burgers where the ingredients were pureed, diced or shaved so it was impossible to tell them apart.

When I took a bite, I was immediately greeted by a fairly strong spicy aroma. This sandwich definitely has a twist. I wouldn’t call it the spicy heat that Buffalo’s hot sauce provides, but rather the red pepper flakes you get when you sprinkle them over pizza or spaghetti sauce.

The bun had a rich texture and the burger bun itself produced a wide range of different tones between the mixed ingredients, whole beans and corn, not to mention a high spiciness. The crunchy jalapenos and pepper jack cheese provided a spicy flavor, and the accompanying vegetables were good as always. Unfortunately, I didn’t get a chance to try the chipotle hot sauce, because for some reason it barely dripped onto the sandwich.

It may be a casual observation, but fast food workers almost never make the right sauce. Either you float or you remain a tiny drop of nothingness. It’s a problem that never seems to go away.

That said, I was pleasantly surprised by the Wendy’s spicy black bean burger. While I wouldn’t call it a burger, but rather a sandwich, the Spicy Black Bean Burger is currently available in test markets in Pittsburgh, Columbus and Jacksonville. Wendy’s said they should know by August if the product will be national. At $5.79 for the sandwich alone and still 580 calories (only ten less than Classic Dave’s single), I’m not sure many meat eaters will be convinced to make this their regular meal, but it’s still relatively encouraging to see a major fast food chain step into this space.
