Making an acai bowl at home is so easy with just a few ingredients! Packed with fresh fruit and granola, this bowl is packed with nutrients and makes for a filling breakfast!
On our last trip to Hawaii, one of the things that caught my eye was the Akai Cups. They were widely used on the island with all kinds of decorations.
I ate an Akai bowl for breakfast every day when I was in Oahu for a week. Some were okay, some were not so good, and some were absolutely delicious. One of my favorites was in Haleiwa – it was so good I ate there two rows in one day!
When I got back, I really wanted to do it and decided to learn how to do it at home. Turns out they’re not hard to make at all!
The acai berry is a fruit that grows on the acai palm and originates from Central and South America. Recently, they have become hugely popular as superfoods worldwide due to their health benefits.
Among a number of other health benefits, the most important is that these berries are packed with antioxidants. If you compare it to blueberries (which are also rich in antioxidants), acai contains three times as many antioxidants.
The most common way to enjoy it, which has caught everyone’s attention, is to eat acai bowls.
It’s basically a thick smoothie made from acai and other frozen fruits mixed with liquid.
This liquid can be juice, milk or coconut water.
A thick cocktail topped with a variety of delicious toppings, that’s what the Acai Bowl is!
You need very few ingredients to make these bowls at home. And you can find these ingredients in the frozen food section of stores like Whole Foods, etc.
- Iced Acai: There are two types of frozen acai bags on the market, one without sugar and the other with sugar. If you want to avoid the extra sugar, opt for a sugar-free option. But if you prefer a sweeter taste, you can also use it with sugar.
- Banana: We need a frozen banana to add the cream. I just freeze a ripe banana overnight before using it in the recipe. Peel banana, cut into 4 pieces, place on baking sheet and freeze for 1 hour. Once they are slightly hard, put them in a ziplock and freeze overnight before using.
- Berries: You can use a mixture of berries, I used a mixture of raspberries, blackberries and blueberries. Again, the berries must be frozen. You can freeze them at home or buy frozen berries at the store, like I did.
- Coconut water : The liquid I used here to mix everything together is coconut water. For example, another liquid may be used. B. Apple juice, milk, even yogurt.
- And that’s the best part of these bowls – the toppings! You can fill them with whatever you want. I used fresh strawberries, a banana, papaya, granola, shredded coconut slices and honey!
1- Put the frozen acai, frozen banana and frozen berries in a high speed blender.
2- Add the coconut water (start with 1/2 cup and add the remaining 1/4 cup if needed).
3- Mix until everything is well blended and smooth. We want the smoothie to be very thick and smooth.
4-Put the cocktail into a bowl. Finish your acai bowl with fresh fruit, granola, honey or other toppings of your choice!
- For example, use a high-speed blender. For example, a Vitamix or a Blendtec. The mixture should be creamy and the fruit should be liquid. If the blender is not running on high speed, it will take a long time to mix everything, and the mixture may not be as thick.
- Be creative with your toppings – other topping ideas include bee pollen, hemp seeds, goji berries, peanut butter, almond butter, chia seeds, sliced almonds, and of course fresh fruit that you have or like!
- You should serve these acai cups right away. The smoothie will continue to melt, so it’s best to enjoy it as soon as you stir it in.
- There are two types of frozen acai bags on the market: with and without sugar. Choose sugar free if you want to use only the natural sweetness and not add sugar.
- You can find frozen acai in the freezer section of grocery stores. One popular brand is Sambazon, which I’ve seen at Whole Foods and PCC. Trader Joe’s also has its own brand of frozen acai.
How do you make it vegetarian?
Omit the honey and use agave or maple syrup to make it vegan. Also, make sure the granola you use is vegan.
Is Akai Bowles okay?
Not really, although berries have several health benefits, it ultimately depends on the type and amount of toppings you add. Lots of sugary cereals or peanut butter can make it quite calorific. It also has a lot of fruit in it and even though it’s natural sugar, it’s still sugar, so if you’re watching your sugar levels, you need to be careful with that too.
Are Acai Bowls good for weight loss?
Not really. Like I said, they’re still high in sugar. So you need to watch your portion size (of the Acai Bowl and your diet in general) and follow a healthy lifestyle if you want to lose weight.
Can I make acai bowls with acai powder?
You can substitute a 100 gram packet of frozen acai with a tablespoon of acai powder to make these bowls.
Are these bowls gluten-free?
Yes, this recipe is due to the fact that I used gluten free granola, so just make sure the granola you use is gluten free.
