Sidecar Cocktail

The classic sidecar is a cocktail party where everyone can sit down. It’s made with just three ingredients that turn it into one of the best cocktails you’ll ever drink.

The ingredients of Sidecar are brandy, orange liqueur and lemon juice. The balance between sweet and sour makes this cocktail so pleasant. If you have the slightest imbalance, you know it right away.

The Sidecar was first made during the First World War and has been as popular as Gimlet vodka ever since. The recipe can be found in two large cocktail books from the early 1900s. Although it has changed a little over time, it is still a great drink that deserves praise.

How did that change? The original recipe contained a more homogenous blend of cognac and orange liqueur, while the more modern recipe reduces the orange liqueur more to achieve a better balance. This gives a more balanced ratio between sweet and sour.

I still advise you to start with this basic recipe and then adjust the orange and lemon components to your personal taste. If you want more of either, it’s up to you.

It is very important that you use fresh lemons for the juice. A lemon gives enough juice for 2 or 3 smoothies.

Which brandy should be used in wheelchair?

The most commonly used cognac is the cognac produced in the Cognac region of France. You can choose Martell, Courvoisier or Hennessy.

I especially like the Hennessy for this cocktail because the cognac it has matured in French oak gives it a delicious vanilla and oak aroma. However, the Martell US costs about half and is still a very good candidate.

You can buy these drinks at your local liquor store – they are sold all over the world. You can also buy them online at Saucey or Drizly.

Of course you can use any other cognac you can easily find. Cognac is more expensive than most other brands, so you can get more for your money elsewhere, but it will not have the same strong taste as cognac.

Another option is the use of oak bourbon. Technically it’s a Bourbon Sidecar, but it’s a very good cocktail and a good substitute if you don’t want to buy cognac for that one drink.

What about orange liqueur?

Yeah, you need a good orange liqueur for the Sidecar. It is an important ingredient and therefore we recommend the use of Cointreau.

Triple Sec is a good second option. It’s cheaper than Cointreau, which is important to you. But it has no depth of taste. Hiram Walker orange liqueur is also an option.

How to make a perfectly balanced snack bar

Add all ingredients in a cocktail shaker with ice. Shake it vigorously until it’s really fresh and frothy, about 15 to 20 seconds.

Pour into a chilled martini or glass and garnish with lemon peel.

Another topping that some people like to have on the Sidecar is the edge of the sugar. If you’re greedier, you can roll the edge of the glass in cocktail sugar for more sweetness.

For more fun, try this lemon drop of sugar. It is filled with lemon peel and has a delicious taste on the rim.

Preparation time: 5 minutes

Total time: 5 minutes

This classic cocktail based on cognac has a perfect balance between sweet and sour.

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 ounce cognac
  • 3/4 ounce Cointreau
  • 3/4 ounce fresh lemon juice
  • Lemon zest and sugar rim for garnish

Instructions

  1. Mix all ingredients in a cocktail shaker. Add ice and shake until it cools. Sieve them into a chilled cutting glass and decorate them with a slice of lemon and a sugar cube if desired.

Notes

  • Once the smoothie is ready, you can adjust the level of sweetness and acidity by adding more of each element until you like it.
  • Freshly squeezed lemon juice is a must. One lemon is enough for 2 or 3 smoothies, depending on the size and juiciness.
  • Peel before cutting the fruit to extract the juice.
