What are the best substitutes for fenugreek?

1. Yellow Mustard Seed and Maple Syrup

The best substitute for fenugreek seeds.

Use yellow mustard seed or, if you are in a hurry, brown mustard seed. They have the same slightly bitter and earthy feel as fenugreek.

Add the same amount of mustard as the fenugreek indicates in the recipe. For a sweet caramel flavor, add a little maple syrup.

2. Curry powder masala

A good option if you are in need of seed replacement.

Masala powder is a good substitute for fenugreek, with cinnamon for sweetness. The cloves impart a spiciness somewhat similar to that of fenugreek. Finish the masala with a pinch of toasted brown sugar.

3. Curry powder

A good option if you are in need of seed replacement.

Curry powder is a British creation that has a similar flavor profile to masala. It usually has fenugreek in it, so it would be interesting to use that as a substitute.

4. Fennel seed

Substitute the fenugreek seeds for a fresher flavor.

Fennel seed is too strong, so don’t use it too much. They have a distinct aniseed flavor that will not work as a substitute in every dish. If you need to make a meat rub or grind up a spice mixture, you can use fennel seeds. The result will be different, but always pleasant.

You can add a few crushed, lightly toasted mustard seeds to balance out the sweetness of the fennel.

Fennel seed is overloaded, don’t overdo it.

5. Mustard seed

The best substitute for fenugreek leaves.

Mustard greens are spicy and bitter leaves that can be used raw or cooked. Sprinkle with curry powder and chips.

6. Celery leaf

A useful option to replace fenugreek leaves when you are short on cash.

Celery has a slightly bitter taste that is also found in fenugreek. Use the leaves in any dish that uses fenugreek leaves.

If you are making an herb mixture, celery seeds are also a good choice. Chinese celery works well if you have it, but it’s not that common.

7. Cabbage

A useful option to replace fenugreek leaves when you are short on cash.

Boil these vegetables before serving to reduce their bitterness. This is a good option for stews and curries that use fenugreek leaves.

Where can I buy fenugreek?

Fenugreek is sold in Indian grocery stores and you can also fill your cupboard with fenugreek leaves (kasuri-methi) or fenugreek powder on Amazon. These two products will add incredible flavor to your next curry.
