When it’s blood orange season, these blood orange martinis are served almost daily in our house. I love the beautiful color of these local Italian oranges, and the juice they produce is magical.
If you like the Cosmopolitan cocktail, you can simply replace the blood orange juice with cranberry juice. All other ingredients remain the same: Vodka, dagger and lemon juice. Therefore, this cocktail is more of a cosmo than a typical martini.
About blood oranges
Blood oranges are native to Italy, but are also grown in many other parts of the world. They are most often found in early spring, when they are in season.
With blood oranges, you never know if the inside is bright red or mostly orange with a little red. If you want a bright red color, look for specimens with a redder bowl. But it doesn’t matter, because the juice of the oranges is bright red.
They also tend to range from very sweet to slightly tart. If you have cake, you can add 1/2 teaspoon of agave syrup or honey to the smoothie to make it a little sweeter. Mix it without sugar and see how you like it, then add a little sweetener to taste.
How to make a Cosmo Blood Orange
To make this cocktail, first suck on the oranges and limes. You’ll need at least one orange per smoothie, sometimes more if they’re not very juicy. And you need at least a lime and a half.

Add the blood orange juice, lime juice, Cointreau and vodka to a shaker with ice. Shake vigorously until the cocktail has cooled.
You can strain the liquid into jars, giving you a clearer liquid without cellulose. I usually don’t worry about it because I love the pulp. But the choice is yours.
If you need to add a sweetener, I recommend 1/2 teaspoon of agave syrup. If you buy oranges in season, they should be sweet enough and not need sugar, but it’s up to you!
