You had no doubt that you saw it. Often right next to the ubiquitous Tabasco red. Texas Pete’s Original Hot Sauce is almost as common on store shelves. And it’s not for nothing that this Louisiana-style hot sauce is so popular – its balance between the flavor of fresh chili pepper and the heat of vinegar is about as balanced as it gets. But how does it behave in terms of overall flavor, and is it as healthy as chilies? Let’s take a bottle of Texas Pete’s Original Hot Sauce and see what it does.

The ingredients of Texas Original Hot Pit Sauce are simple: vinegar, chili peppers (pepper, salt, vinegar), water, xanthan gum and sodium benzoate (to keep it fresh and flavorful).

It’s as simple as a hot sauce can be – as you’d expect from a Louisiana-style hot sauce. Texas Pete relies on these aged peppers for flavor. And the good news is that he allows these aged peppers to ferment well to really bring them to life in this sauce. In fact, the peppers and vinegar at the top of the ingredient list are so well balanced that Pete Texas tastes much more robust than many other Louisiana-style hot sauces I’ve tried.

Wrong: The movie is not the specified.original Texas Pete hot sauce on a spoon.

You first taste the heat of this vinegar, but it is not as strong as that of Tabasco and other competitors. The delicious peppery flavor of the aged red peppers comes a little earlier than expected and lingers in all the right ways.

The thickness of this sauce is also true. Most red sauces are quite watery, but this one is very spreadable while being thinner.

I’m sure some of you know this: Many of these Louisiana style hot sauces, like this one, contain sodium. Pete Texas sells 90 mg per teaspoon, which is lower than some of its competitors (but not as low as the pepper sauce in Tabasco originally). I wouldn’t call that low sodium, but you could do worse.

Heat balance

Texas Pete offers a range of Scoville heat units for its original hot sauce: 340 to 740 Scoville Heat Units (SHU), which puts it between mild and medium in the world of hot sauces. By comparison, Tabasco Red Sauce has 2,500 to 5,000 SHU and Louisiana Hot Sauce has 450 SHU.

In terms of spiciness of fresh pepper, Texas Pete is well below the spiciness of jalapeños (2,500 to 8,000 SHU). It is also below the heat of peppers (1,000 to 1,500 SHU). It is more in the mild banana pepper heat range (0 to 500 SHU), with the possibility of touching more. If you can stand banana peppers in a sandwich, you can stand the Texas Pete Original.

I used about five to six tablespoons on different pieces of chicken as a taste test, but I never got to the point where I had to stop. The heat lasts about a minute and then slowly dissipates with no unpleasant consequences. Since you can use a large serving of Texas Pita, it may seem like the sauce is a little spicier than the actual heat, but in reality it is a hot sauce that the whole family can enjoy.

You’ll never want to eat chicken again unless you have Texas Pete at the table. It is the perfect sauce, especially with chicken wings, but also delicious with eggs, pizza and even ice cream. Yes, I love Louisiana Red Vinegar Sauce on vanilla ice cream! It gives it just the right amount of flavor to turn that boring scoop of vanilla into a tasty treat. Salty and sweet? Sold out.

It also goes very well with a steak sauce. The consistency is quite fine (and the vinegar isn’t that pronounced), so you can easily mix it with other marinades and sauces for a little more fun. You can also skip the steak sauce and go straight to Texas Pete!

This hot sauce is about as “findable” as Tabasco, so it is certainly not a niche product and therefore unique. But a few fun facts. Pete’s original Texas hot sauce is actually not the first sauce this family ever made. They were first known for their amazing barbecue sauce that first appeared in 1929. And the brand doesn’t come from Texas….. at all It comes from North Carolina, where Pete spends his time in Texas.

It gets even more interesting when you know that the Texas Pete Original is a hot sauce from Louisiana. So many states have their hooks in that sauce, it’s crazy. I like the story and it adds to the hot sauce collection that is so important in stores.

Etiquette is fun, too. It highlights the Texas cowboy side of the Texas Pete brand. Plus, the red peppers are clearly visible and the combination of red and yellow is absolutely remarkable on the label. It’s a hot sauce that screams “THREE MANS!” on the shelf.
