In a world where there are more and more options, it can be difficult to choose the right LED lighting. As a rule of thumb, the goal is to maximize your grow space, provide adequate light output and not overload the bank.

This is where the ViparSpectra Pro series of LEDs comes in. This company has long been in the growing lighting business and has had success with the “fuzzy” type of light. They now have a new series of affordable and easy to use LED lights that will fit into most growing installations.

Today we are pleased to introduce ViparSpectra P1500 LED light, which is a mid-range LED light of Pro Series LED series. We look at all the important details including build quality, light output, price, etc. Let’s get started!

What’s in the box?

In the box you will find everything you need for a quick start. The LED driver is pre-assembled on the back of the light panel. There are also 4 cables to hang the light and 2 ratchet cables to easily adjust the height.

Included items :

  • LED panel
  • Guide (pre-installed)
  • Power cable (connected to the conductor)
  • 4 small cables with push buttons
  • 2 ratchet ropes with spring knobs
  • user manual

The light also has a heat sink on the back of the LED panel. This is great for keeping the lamp cooler during use, but we’ll talk about that later.

The only thing you will probably need is a timer for the outlet, since the light cannot be turned off with a switch. Other than that, this ViparSpectra lamp is practically ready to be hung and plugged in as soon as it comes out of the box.

Specifications and quality of construction

Now let’s take a look at this particular model, the P1500. The quality of construction seems very solid and the parts seem to be well put together. Nothing comes loose or snaps inside or outside the unit.

Specifications:

  • Width: 13.5″
  • Depth: 11″
  • Height: 3″ (without driver), 1.5″ (without driver)
  • Weight: 6.6 lbs.
  • Dimmer setting: 5% – 100
  • Power consumption: 150 W (at 100%)
  • Flow rate at 12 inches: 1027 mmol/s
  • Made in China
  • Waterproof LEDs and drivers

With the creation of this line, ViparSpectra seemed to solve all the problems of other quantum LED cards. These included cooling, water resistance, and the ability to limit light.

Cooling (heat sink)

Weighing in at 2.5 kg, the heatsink certainly makes this unit much thicker and heavier than other LED boards. However, the end result of a heat sink makes the extra weight worthwhile.

Heat dissipation works by efficiently increasing the surface area of the LED panel. This is a pure metal surface that dissipates heat effectively, resulting in a lower operating temperature.

The card of properly functioning LEDs extends the life of your bulbs, allowing them to grow stronger plants for longer. The driver is also mounted about 1 cm from the LED board to allow for air circulation.

Water resistance

The thin silicone coating on the LEDs makes all Pro Series units suitable for wet or damp conditions. I really like this feature because I no longer have to worry about my light when I water or water my plants.

In addition, all cables are rubberized, making the conductor waterproof. This protection from water also helps protect the LEDs and other exposed components from dust accumulation.

Dimmer

The dimmer is my favorite part of this grow light. Although the height adjustment can actually decrease or increase the intensity of the light, it is still so convenient to have a dial!

Viparspectra p1500 Dimmer Knob

The percentages of the ViparSpectra dimmers are very close to the actual power consumption, as shown in this video. This means that the percentage set on the dial actually subtracts this percentage from the total available power. For example, if the P1500 is set to 50%, the power consumption is about 75 watts.

The dimmer knob has a nice weight to it, with a sense of overall quality. This feature can be very useful for starting young plants that don’t need all their intensity, or for experimenting with your specific plants.

ViparSpectra P1500 Light Output

At full power, this LED consumes only about 150 watts of electricity. See the full PPFD light table for the 2’x2′ grow room.

Considering the price, the ViparSpectra lamps are among the most efficient LEDs on the market. If you increase your budget, you will get better light output per watt, but only by a small amount.

These lights are very impressive for such a low price. At 12″, this unit produces over 1,000 mmol/s. This is a measure of PPF, or light output that can be used in all directions. In other words, how much usable light does the fixture produce?

LED types

There are different types of diodes in this panel. This photo shows all the different color temperatures. On board are 3000K warm white LEDs, 5000K cold white LEDs, 660nm deep red LEDs and 730nm infrared LEDs.

The 3000K and 5000K LEDs provide natural white light. Both color temperatures are important for plant growth. 5000K is excellent for vegetative growth, while 3000K is more suitable for the flowering phase.

When fruiting peppers or similar plants, the dark red color and IR light are important for proper fruiting. These visible red lights deliver this critical wavelength evenly into your growing space.

The overall look of the light output is warmer than that of our Quantum HLG 100 4000K card. It is sunnier and more natural, and the difference between the types of LEDs gives me confidence that this light will give what the plants need.

ViparSpectra LED coating

Given the dimensions of P1500 (13.5′ x 11.5′), a suitable growing area is estimated at 3’x3′. For a flowering plant, the recommended area is just under 2.5’x2.5′. This is an average value for plants of this size.

Device Power Coverage area Where to buy
P1000 100W 2.5’x2.5′ Buy
P1500 150W 3’x3′ Buy
P2000 200W 4’x4′ Buy
P2500 250W 4’x4.5′ Buy
P4000 400W 5’x5′ Buy

If you want to cover a larger growing area, the Pro Series includes the larger P2000 (200W) or P4000 (400W) model.

These 5 devices all have the same technology and include the same suspension system. The larger the device, the heavier it is. The P4000 weighs more than 20 pounds.

Larger units can cover a larger growing area in a single package. However, it may also make sense to just buy a few smaller units depending on your specific space needs.

General Considerations

After testing our new grow light P1500, we are very impressed with the packaging. This lamp is perfect for our annual indoor growing needs.

To:

  • Low prices for products
  • Dimmer
  • Fully sealed
  • Full spectrum of sunlight
  • Large PPFD graph and light spectrum
  • Mute

Delays:

  • Strong enough
  • The suspension hooks are too small for some tent pegs.
  • Not the name of the brand and the LED driver

This 150 watt bulb is perfect for operating our pepper seedling planters indoors thanks to its button light control. But it is also possible to grow a mature bell pepper plant indoors if you wish.

All in all, I am very happy to have this light. While our HLG 100 V2 is an excellent grow light, this ViparSpectra is a big step up. The ease of use is a big improvement and the only drawback is the extra weight and size.

If you are looking for an entry level LED, I cannot recommend the ViparSpectra Pro series enough. We will keep you posted on our experiences here. When growing plants from seed, we look at long-term reliability and overall performance.
