Elijah’s XTreme Regret Hot Sauce is a fiery, hot sauce made by Elijah Brooks, a young African-American man who is determined to change the way hot sauce is perceived in the United States. “Elijah’s XTreme Regret Hot Sauce is designed to put you in a state of regret by the time you’re done eating it.” I was introduced to Elijah’s XTreme Regret Hot Sauce at the Annual Hot Sauce Expo in Dallas, Texas at the end of August, and a few days later I returned home with a bottle of the hot sauce, which I promptly put to the test.

Elijah’s XTreme Regret Hot Sauce is a fascinating product. It’s a condiment that’s made from the tears of regret of a chemist who worked with genetically modified, hormone-enhanced chili peppers. Elijah’s XTreme Regret Hot Sauce has been engineered to create the maximum amount of heat while also having a low fat content.

I have spent some time in the past reviewing various hot sauces, but I had never really tried one that I felt was worthy of getting a full-scale review from a long-term perspective. The only other one that came close was a bottle of the “Original Ghost Pepper Hot Sauce” from  Ghost Pepper Products , which I reviewed back in 2013 . So, I had high hopes for Elijah’s XTreme Regret Hot Sauce from  XTreme Foods .

If there’s one thing you should know about Xtreme Regret Hot Sauce by Elijah, it’s that it’s spicy. It’s well called, since the bottle contains a tremendous quantity of spice (near ghost pepper heat!). This isn’t a spicy sauce for people who aren’t afraid of a little heat. Extreme eaters, on the other hand: Here’s a bottle of unadulterated pyrotechnics. But how can the taste stand up to such a high level of spiciness? Is it all about the heat? Is it useful in situations other than hot sauce dares? To answer all of your questions, we delve into a bottle.

Elijah’s Xtreme Regret Hot Sauce

Elijah’s XTreme Regret Hot Sauce is a delectable blend of scorching heat and fruity sweetness. There’s more depth here than in many super-hot sauces, and there’s very little dilution to protect you from the super-spiciness and natural sweetness of the Carolina Reaper and scorpion peppers.

Heat Level: Extremely Hot (800,000 SHU)

  • Very minimal pepper dilution, resulting in a true super-hot taste.
  • Beyond the fire, the taste has a lot of complexity.
  • Family history is fascinating.

From a quick look at the ingredients list, you can tell Elijah’s XTreme Regret Hot Sauce is going to be very spicy. The Trinidad Scorpion and Carolina Reaper chili peppers, garlic, carrots, tomato paste, apple cider vinegar, salt, sugar, garlic, acetic and citric acids (acidity regulators), onion, lemon, passion fruit (citric extracts), sugar cane vinegar, xanthin gum (thickener), and ascorbic acid are just a few of the ingredients (antioxidant).

Below, we’ll get into the heat. For the time being, just know that this is a spicy sauce with a high degree of spiciness. Starting with Trinidad Moruga Scorpion and Carolina Reaper is as daring as it gets.

A lovely sweet fragrance greets you as soon as you open the bottle. The fragrance is dominated by a combination of carrots, tomato paste, apple cider vinegar, and sugar (along with the fruitiness of the Chinese chilies).

The sweetness is carried through in the taste, and if you can get beyond the first blast of heat, it’s really very delicious. Also, the rear has a wonderful garlicky undertone. Instead of going all out with the heat, it adds some depth to the sauce.

On a spoon, Elijah’s XTreme Regret Hot Sauce

Imagine a sweet, fruity kick in the arse when you consume Elijah’s XTreme Regret Hot Sauce. It’s the kind of taste you’ll only get in super-hot chili sauces that use fresh pepper flavors rather than pepper extracts. The spiciness is intense but not overpowering, letting the natural tastes to show through.

On sodium, each teaspoon portion has 100 mg, or 4% of your recommended intake. Given the heat of the sauce, how likely are you to be concerned about the total salt content? For the most part, a few drops will enough.

Temperature Harmony

The background of Elijah’s XTreme Regret is fascinating. The long and short of it is that this hot sauce was born out of a shared desire between father and son (through the boy’s formative years and into adulthood) to produce a “more delicious, thicker, hotter, hot sauce.”

They do this by including two of the world’s hottest chillies, the Carolina Reaper (1.4 million to 2.2 million Scoville heat units) and the Trinidad Moruga Scorpion (1.4 million to 2.2 million Scoville heat units) (1.2 million to 2 million SHU.) To put that into perspective, a typical jalapeo pepper has a total SHU of approximately 5,250.

So, these are some serious chiles, and one of the best things about Elijah’s XTreme Regret Hot Sauce is that it lets them shine, both in terms of heat and taste. This is a genuine super-hot hot sauce, with no dilution with water, vinegar, or any liquid, and flavor combinations that emphasize the inherent fruity sweetness of both of these chilies.

It has a Scoville heat rating of 800,000 Scoville heat units, which I believe is correct. This is scorching. Consider this: a jar of super-hot fresh ghost peppers has 855,000 SHU. Elijah’s XTreme Regret gets close to matching the spiciness.

The spiciness strikes you in the back of your throat right away and lasts for a few minutes. The more you layer it on, the more it builds up, so start with tiny drips and see how much you can take. This isn’t a sauce to be messed with with.

You’ll be able to taste the sweetness and garlic undertones after you’ve gotten over the hot shock. Elijah’s XTreme Regret has a lot of depth to it, not simply the harsh heat you get with extracts, which tends to destroy any taste other than the spiciness. And that taste is strong enough to withstand the high temperatures.

With very hot sauces like these, it’s difficult to judge usability. Because of the extreme spiciness, they are naturally at a disadvantage.

Elijah’s XTreme Regret is unlikely to appeal to anybody who isn’t a fan of very spicy sauces. Sure, a few drips here and there are OK, but you’re probably better off with a spicy sauce that matches your heat tolerance.

However, if you like setting your lips on fire, you’ll appreciate the usefulness here. It’s the taste and heat combination that makes it so much fun on a variety of meals.

Elijah’s XTreme Regret is delicious on chicken wings, chili, and grilled meats. I used it in my BBQ sauce and found that just a few drops provided enough of spice to an otherwise moderate sauce. I also put a few drops over a BBQ sandwich, and the fruity heat was very noticeable. Even those few drips of garlic gave me a hint of garlic.

Just a few drops will certainly be enough to transform a boring meal into a spicy one. You won’t be hurting if you don’t use a teaspoon the first time.

In terms of collectibility, this hot sauce has a lot going for it: a fun family history, an ominous hot sauce name, and a heat/flavor combination that lives up to its branding.

The label of Elijah’s XTreme Regret is a great visual representation of what you’ll find within this bottle: a scorpion crawling out of a skull. It’s a clear reminder of the sting you’ll get from the scorpion peppers in here. And, to be honest, what you could look like if you overdo it with the spicy sauce.

Plus, you’ll be supporting a father-and-son-owned family company dedicated to producing exceptional hotter spicy sauces. That’s also a clear victory.

The Score

Elijah’s XTreme Regret Hot Sauce is a delectable blend of scorching heat and fruity sweetness. There’s more depth here than in many super-hot sauces, and there’s very little dilution to protect you from the super-spiciness and natural sweetness of the Carolina Reaper and scorpion peppers.
