That’s how Chick-fil-A describes his new “Spicy Grilled Deluxe.”
Boneless chicken breast marinated with a slice of pepper and grilled for a tender and flavorful taste, served on a toasted multigrain brioche bun with colby jack cheese, green lettuce and tomato. Served with a cilantro and lime sauce.
Chicken sandwiches are all the rage these days. Anyone with a cousin who has a deep fryer in the basement is trying to make a chicken sandwich that can compete with the best hotties. The Filter Chicken decided to tread the latter frontier with a spicy grilled sandwich, which as far as I know is the only one going up this aisle.
Although Chick-fil-a pioneered simple, Southern-style roast chicken sandwiches, they have brought a new level of quality to grilled chicken over the past decade. Compared to most other restaurants where the chicken is grilled in a bathtub, Chick-fil-a has a very pleasant taste. My only complaint over the years is that the price seems too high for fast food restaurants.
We now introduce you to the first entrant in the fried condiment war who has not even faced a competitor yet. At $5.65 for a sandwich, the price is well justified. When you discover it, it’s hard not to notice the grains and dumplings in the artisanal multigrain bread. Chicken has those charred grill marks that make me want it on warmer days. The chicken is marinated with spices that seem to give the chicken a bomb of flavor. Without the luxury of pan-searing, grilled chicken must be soaked in a marinade to retain flavor.
To finish the sandwich, there was a piece of cheese that could have been in Colby Jack, American or Pepper Jack. The Colby is standard, but I opted for the stellar Jack. So did lettuce and tomatoes. I added dill pickles to the mix.
If you have a Chick-fil-a experience, they make the wise decision to give you a packet of sauces to manage at their discretion. Too often, in fast-food takeout restaurants, the sauce takes over the sandwich and creates a soggy factor that can’t be undone. With a packet of sauce, you can pile it on top of your sandwich or even toss it aside if you’re a diver. The cilantro-lime sauce is a new sauce for this sandwich, and since I hate cilantro, I was a little skeptical.
As you can see from the cross section, the sandwich stayed together, which is good for fast food. The spicy piece of chicken was very tasty. This flavor on the grill was followed by a good afterburner, not only spicy but tasty. The chicken definitely stood out. The bun was firm and held up well to the moisture of the lettuce, tomato and sauce. The cilantro and lime sauce was more lime flavored, almost like Lime Ranch, with a touch of cilantro. I was a big fan because lime and ranch is an undiscovered combination that definitely works.
Now that there is no competition, I am already putting the Chick-fil – a spicy deluxe with grill on a pretty high pedestal. It will take a lot of work to topple this so-called king. Considering that the price is the only downside, this Grilled Spicy Deluxe is a first-round coup de grâce.

If lettuce, tomato and cheese are the expected features of Chicken Phil, I may be a simple guy, but I prefer the chicken and pickles of the regular chicken sandwich. But I definitely don’t want to argue that Chicken Sandwich Deluxe is anything other than a great sandwich.
