Apple pie is a classic dessert. In Germany, where it probably comes from, it is known as apple pie. The traditional apple pie is soft and tender, with all the flavours of cinnamon, almonds and nutmeg. Although this apple pie looks fantastic (see our recipe notes below for variations), it is very easy to make. Serve with a few scoops of vanilla ice cream, whipped cream or a drop of maple syrup. You don’t need any special equipment or skills – just a large mixing bowl and a whisk. This recipe is a slice of apple pie!

How to make an apple pie from scratch

Beat the eggs. Add the sugar and beat again.

Add milk and sunflower oil and beat together.

Add the flour and baking powder and mix well until the flour is no longer lumpy.

Peel the apple and slice it. Add to the dough and stir.

Grease a 15 cm springform with butter and sprinkle with breadcrumbs.

Pour the batter into the cake tin.

Place a whole apple in the middle of the dough and garnish with apple wedges.

Bake in a preheated oven at 180°C/350°F for 45 minutes until cooked (when a metal skewer comes out clean).

Tips

This apple pie recipe works best with Pink Lady, Honeycrisp or Royal Gala apples. Don’t use Granny Smith because they’re too sour.

You don’t have to use an electric guard. In fact, it is better to beat the dough by hand, so as not to exaggerate.

You can also add a teaspoon of cinnamon and a cup of ½ nuts to the apple pie dough.

This apple pie is best served at room temperature or slightly heated.

Notes

If you want more texture, you can make a cinnamon croquant. Just mix ¼ cup of sugar, 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon and 1 tablespoon of melted butter. Sprinkle the cake dough with crunchy cinnamon before putting it in the oven.

If you don’t like cinnamon, you can add brittle almonds. Just sprinkle the cake dough with almond flakes and 2 tablespoons of sugar before baking.

If you still don’t have the sweet tooth, you can make a icing to sprinkle on the top before serving. Just mix a quarter cup of superfine sugar and 2 tablespoons of milk and stir until smooth. Cover the cake before serving.

You can also serve plain apple pie with a scoop (or two) of vanilla ice cream.

Apple pie stays fresh for up to 3 days, but you can also freeze it. Simply cut into slices and wrap each slice with plastic foil. Defrost in the fridge or reheat in the microwave for a few minutes.
