Manhattan Tequila is a worthy competitor to the classic Manhattan you’ve been drinking all these years. The spicy taste of Añejo tequila goes in a slightly different direction.

If you’re already a Manhattan fan, you might want to try this Manhattan tequila. It’s a bit like the original, but with a nice twist.

The classic Manhattan is made of rye, sweet and bitter vermouth. It is stirred, not shaken, and served on ice or neatly with cherries.

It’s so simple, but it’s one of the best rye drinks (we also like Boulevardier) and it’s obviously very popular. Manhattan tequila, sometimes called Distrito Federal after Mexico City, uses Añejo tequila instead of rye.

The drink is still quite sweet and refined, but it has a sharper than bitter profile.

What is tequila añejo?

Anejo refers to the degree of aging of this tequila. It must be kept in oak barrels for 1 to 3 years. The result is a sweet and full tequila.

Normally I wouldn’t use old tequila in a cocktail, but this cocktail is different. The strong, matured taste of tequila goes so well with sweet vermouth. It makes a very good digestive cocktail.

We use the Don Julio Anejo stream, but there are many other brands like Patron, Casamigos or Corazon.

How to make tequila in Manhattan

To make this drink, mix tequila and sweetened vermouth in a cocktail glass with ice and stir. I like to use a large piece of ice, but a small cube or two works too.

Add 2 dashes of bitterness. Garnish with cherries.

  • 1 1/2 ounce tequila añejo
  • 3/4 ounces of sweet vermouth
  • 2 Dash Bitters (depending on which one you want)
  • 1 maraschino cherry for garnish


  1. Mix tequila, sweet and bitter vermouth in a glass with ice and stir. Garnish with maraschino cherries.
