Troy Primo led an interesting life. From destroying it in the 1990s as part of the psychedelic rock band Deep South Santeria to growing the hottest chili pepper in the world, the 7 Pot Primo.
In the early 2000s, Primo turned to gardening, apparently in search of a more family-friendly lifestyle. While studying at Louisiana State University, he carefully crossed pepper varieties to produce 7 Pot Primo, a distinctive and super pungent variety.
Known as a cross between the Naga Morih and the Trinidadian 7-Pot Pepper, the 7-Pot Primo is naturally very spicy.

The 7-chambered sea squirt is also controversial. Its appearance and calorific value are remarkably similar to that of the infamous Carolina Reaper, and some speculate that this may not be a coincidence.

We know that 7 Pot Primo is a cross between 2 very hot peppers, but even Primeaux was surprised by the result. It is by far one of the hottest chilies in the world.
Simply put, Troy Pramo said the 7-pot Primo bell pepper has a value of about 1,500,000 SHU, making it one of the hottest peppers ever officially tested. By comparison, habanero peppers have about 250,000 SHU and jalapeño peppers only 5,000.
The pepper is bright red and looks like a mushroom cloud from a nuclear explosion. Its unusual, lumpy shape suits the crushing heat well.

The Original 7 Pot Pepper takes its name from a local legend from Trinidad that says each pepper can flavor up to 7 pots of stew. The 7 Pot Peppers are very hot, and Pramo’s Cross is the king of them all.
This brings us to an important topic. Which is hotter, the Carolina Reaper or the 7 Pot Primo? The capsules are similar, have similar heat levels, but one of them is much better known.
Carolina Reaper vs. 7 Pot Primo Controversy
The discussion on the Internet has raised the question of whether Carolina Reaper is simply a Primo 7-Pot in disguise. These two varieties are very similar and both extremely spicy. Which one really deserves to hold the crown of the world’s hottest chili pepper?
In this charming phone interview, Troy Pramo suggests that the two are indeed the same pepper. He also claims that Primo’s 7 Pot holds the record for the hottest pepper tested at the NMSU Chili Pepper Institute in Chile.
Some test results circulating on the Internet compare the SHU values of the two peppers, with the Primo sometimes outperforming the Reaper. However, I cannot personally verify whether these are official results.
Ed Currie claims that his Carolina Reaper is a cross between a Pakistani Naga (ghost) pepper and a mysterious Caribbean habanero pepper called La Soufrière. Since these are two obscure varieties of peppers, the true origin of the Reaper gene is largely unknown.
The 7 Pot Primo, on the other hand, has a well-documented origin. It is known to be a cross between the Trinidad Pot and the Naga Moric Pepper.
Troy Pramo began developing his crossbred bell pepper plant in the horticulture department at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette in the early 2000s. In this article, he describes in detail the history of the origin of pepper (highly recommended reading!).
Pramo earned his degree in sustainable agriculture and horticulture from ULL. He also worked with his teachers to create Pepper Cross. The fact is, Troy is no amateur when it comes to growing and cultivating plants.
Primeaux spoke openly about selling seeds during the early development of 7-Pot Primo, before Pepper Cross was stable. This led some to question whether Ed Curry was one of the early seed buyers.
In 2012, Carolina Reaper became the official leader of the world’s hottest chilies, and Primeaux was shocked. The new chili was probably very reminiscent of her beloved 7-Pot Primo, which was developed by 7 generations at the time.
More strangely, both pepper varieties have a distinctive “tail” or “stinger.” This unique feature of peppers was largely unknown before the two varieties of peppers were introduced.
Operating sequence of the system
Some fellow producers claim that the 7 Pot Primo is a more consistent pepper than the Carolina Reaper. Consistency means that the plants reliably produce peppers in terms of shape, size, yield and heat level.
Much depends on growing and maintenance conditions, but how do plants behave when kept at a constant level?
Others, like this grower associated with Puckerbutt, claim that Reaper is very hardy, with less than 2% of the seeds growing in inconsistent pods. He also claims to have grown 7 primos in pot, and that they were different.
We cannot personally confirm this either, as we have not yet grown primos in 7 pots, but we can share our recent experience growing magazines.
The two Carolina Reaper plants we grew in 2020 were highly irregular in shape, size and pod productivity. Of the more than 40 varieties of peppers grown in 2020, our Reaper plants were the least productive. A Reeper plant produced no peppers, while a neighboring JPGS plant produced dozens of pods.
One out of every two peppers we have grown has produced a decent harvest. We have grown many varieties of super hot peppers with great success, so it is not a matter of growing technique or environmental factors.
One possible explanation is that we ordered our Reaper seeds from a third party supplier, semillas.de. This is a reputable supplier of pepper seeds, but ultimately our seeds do not come directly from Puckerbutt. Furthermore, we only grew 2 Reaper plants, which means that the results are not reflective of the plant variety as a whole.
We have the official seed in stock for Primo’s 7th pot, ready to be planted in 2021. We also purchased the official Reaper seed from Puckerbutt to compare the two varieties side by side. We will update this article with our results later this year. Time will tell!

Journalist vs. Primo – General Reflections
Owning the rights to the world’s hottest chili pepper comes with big financial rewards, so we’ll probably never know the whole truth. Smoking Ed may have been a savvy salesman who took advantage of the opportunity.
It is entirely possible that Smokin’ Ed Currie got the seeds of 7 Pot Primo early and named them peppers to maintain the Guinness World Record title. Along with the seed, he may also have used Primo genetics to cross with other bell pepper varieties.
Another possibility is that Ed Currie simply bred Primo seeds over several generations, selecting the hottest peppers. This would not amount to a new variety, but rather a slightly different result from the same original genetics.
Of course, it is also possible that Currie worked independently of Troy Pramo to develop a very similar chili pepper. Smoky Ed is certainly passionate about growing and hybridizing peppers.
Anyway, Carolina Reaper has become a more famous pepper. It’s the kind of pepper every super-hot sauce maker wants to use in their hot products.

Since the introduction of the Primo 7 pots into the world of chili peppers in the 2000s, many variations have been discovered and isolated. These are mainly color variations of the original shape of the pod.
7 Primo Orange in pot – Seeds
The orange version, like the original 7 Pot Primo, has a lighter yellow-orange color. It is said to have a great taste and still have a hot heat.
7 Primo Potted Chocolate – Seeds
Another color variation, chocolate pods usually have a more floral flavor. Chocolate pods are always fascinating to watch as they ripen in the garden. These pods are really scary!
Primotalii – Seeds
Some popular chili-heads claim that Primotalii peppers are the hottest peppers they have ever tasted. This is a cross between a 7-pot Primo and a yellow Fatalii pepper. The long, thin pods with very long tails look decidedly mean.
