Naan bread is leavened bread, the most important bread in Sri Lanka, India and parts of Southeast Asia. The original version is baked in a tandoor type terracotta oven at an extremely high temperature for 30 seconds before it is ready for consumption.
Naan has a muddy, cloudy top with a crispy bottom. The sweet taste is slightly saltier than ordinary bread and the texture is pasty. Use naan for curry sauce, pizza, kebab or serve with a basmati rice main course.
If naan bread is not available or is not suitable for dietary reasons, you can use this alternative with your next meal. We’ve put together a list of our favorite naan bread substitutes that don’t require an expensive tandoor oven.
What can I use to replace naan bread?
The best substitutes for naan bread are mouth bread, parata bread, peeled bread, lavender bread or tortilla bread. Although they all have subtle differences, they are all perfect for a delicious snack or served with your favourite Indian curry. For a more authentic option you can also make your own bread at home. That is why we have included a simple yeast-free naan recipe at the bottom of this page.
Toasted bread, also called chapati, is an excellent substitute for naan bread, which is healthier and easier to make. Take finely chopped flour such as Atta and add a little salt and water, then knead until soft. After a soaking time of 10 minutes, the dough can be spread out thinly and cooked in a hot pan for one minute on each side.
The main difference is that the rotifer is not fermented, so the yeast is not involved. For those who can’t eat yeast, the best option is to bake the bread. It is also lighter than naan bread; Indians eat it as daily food, while naan bread is probably reserved for special occasions.
Paratha is a wheat cake baked in oil or melted butter in a pan or tave (stone pan). The texture is layered, thicker and viscous than that of naan bread. These are different cooking styles. Paratan bread is rolled several times on the couch and folded like puff pastry, while naan is usually only rolled once and then baked.
Although naan bread is usually served as a complement to other dishes, parata is sometimes served as a separate dish. It can be eaten for breakfast, lunch or dinner, or served with a selection of other delicious ingredients.
Puri, or poor people, is a fresh pie made of whole wheat. It comes from the Indian subcontinent and is eaten as a snack or served with other spicy or sweet recipes. If you like deep-fried food, you might be better off serving peeled bread than naan bread. It is cooked in very hot oil, which makes the dough swell and crispy.
4. Pita bread
There are similarities between flat bread and naan, for both are sour wheat flat breads. However, Naan generally has a softer texture and contains additional ingredients such as yoghurt and milk. Foods contain fewer ingredients and have a drier, firmer texture. It is usually cut in half and stuffed with meat, cheese, salad or other ingredients usually used in sandwiches.
Pita and naan are perfect as a pizza base or to serve with your favourite sauces.
In the United States, flat bread is easy to find and can be used as an excellent substitute for naanu. Although not traditionally used as an authentic Indian bread, the tortilla will certainly set the table, served with delicious classics such as butter chicken or chicken steak.
The main difference between the two types of bread is that naan is made from wheat flour and sourdough, while pies are traditionally baked with corn and unleavened.
6. Create your own
Follow the simple steps below to build a soft and fluffy house. Although traditional yeast is used for this bread, the recipe below leaves the bread untouched. We did it so you wouldn’t have to wait for the money. Moreover, it can be prepared by anyone on the basis of yeast.
Freshly Boiled Tut : 8 Naan
- 2 ½ Universal flour glasses
- ⅔ one teaspoon sand sugar
- 1 teaspoon
- 3/4 teaspoon salt
- 4 tablespoons creamy butter
- 6. For centuries.
- ½ Glass of natural fat yoghurt.
- Put the flour, sugar, baking powder and salt in a large bowl and mix until well mixed.
- Heat the butter and milk in a small saucepan until the butter melts and then remove from the heat. Let it cool down a little.
- Mix the yogurt with the recipe in a large bowl and then slowly add the dry ingredients until the dough starts to form.
- Knead the dough with your hands on a light red surface until it is smooth. If the dough is sticky, add a little flour.
- Let the dough rest for 30 minutes in a bowl covered with wrapping paper.
- Divide the dough into eight equal parts and shape balls, and then roll them out to an oval shape. Turn the dough a few times while rolling it out. Sprinkle the needle with extra flour to prevent it from sticking. The final ovals should be 1/8th thick and about 6 x 9 in size.
- Cook Inan in a preheated frying pan over medium or high heat without oil. Turn the bread over when the bottom turns light brown and bubbles begin to form at the top. Cook another minute, then take it off the fire and serve on the table. You can also place each naan on a plate and cover it with foil until you are ready to serve.

Baked naan bread can be kept for up to three days in a cool, dry place at room temperature. It can also be refrigerated for up to seven days in a zipped bag.
Naan bread can be frozen in a zipped bag for up to six months before it begins to lose its quality. When it’s time to use the bread, let it thaw at room temperature and cook it briefly in a pan over high heat.
Raw bread dough is best prepared fresh. If you need to cool it down, remember that the texture becomes sticky and you may need to add extra flour and knead it before baking.
Baking naan bread at home is simple and requires only a few simple ingredients. However, the real naan is cooked in a tandem door, and if you don’t want to cook your naan in a pan, you may prefer the other option. The best substitutes for naan bread are mouth bread, parata bread, peeled bread, lavender bread or tortilla bread. Naan is hard to beat in taste and texture, but few people will complain if you use one of these alternative loaves with your next meal.
